Please note that Bhutan’s travel policies and immigration requirements may change from time to time. We recommend confirming the latest requirements before making your travel arrangements.
VISA REQUIREMENTS
All international visitors (except nationals of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, who follow separate entry procedures) require a valid a valid Bhutan visa entering the country. Your visa is processed through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or an approved hotel that is authorized to arrange visas for eligible guests. You can also apply online at https://www.immi.gov.bt/home/.
You will need:
- A passport valid for at least six months from your date of arrival.
- A recent passport-sized photograph (a digital copy will suffice)
- Payment of applicable government fees (listed below).
Once your visa has been approved, you will receive a Visa Clearance Letter, which must be presented when checking in for your flight to Bhutan.
MANDATORY GOVERNMENT FEES
All visitors are required to pay Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), as determined by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The SDF supports Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
A non-refundable, one-time visa fee of USD 40 is applicable to all nationalities with the exception of Indians, Bangladeshis, and Maldivians (Please do note that the visa fee is non-refundable once paid).
Different rates and exemptions may apply depending on nationality, age, or government policies in effect at the time of travel. At the moment, the SDF fees are as follows:
- Adults from countries other than India: USD 100 per day per person (Please do note that all travelers aged 12 and above are considered adults)
- Child (between the age of 6 to 12): USD 50 per day per child
- Child (under the age of 6): Free
- Indian nationals – adults: Rs. 1,200 per day per person
- Indian nationals – child (between the age of 6 to 12): Rs. 600 per day per child
- Indian nationals – child (under the age of 6): Free
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Visitors should ensure they have:
- A passport with at least six months’ validity.
- A valid Bhutan visa or entry permit, where applicable.
- Confirmed accommodation.
- Return or onward travel arrangements.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Although not mandatory for all visitors, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should ideally cover:
- Medical treatment.
- Emergency evacuation.
- Trip cancellation or interruption.
- Personal accidents.
CURRENCY
The local currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which is at par with the Indian Rupee (INR). Major hotels, restaurants, and shops accept cash, while many businesses also accept credit cards and digital payments. ATMs are available in major towns.
WEATHER
Bhutan experiences four distinct seasons:
- Spring (March–May): Pleasant temperatures and blooming flowers.
- Summer (June–August): Monsoon season with regular rainfall.
- Autumn (September–November): Clear skies and ideal conditions for sightseeing.
- Winter (December–February): Cool temperatures with cold mornings and evenings.
We recommend bringing clothing suitable for the season, including comfortable walking shoes.
RESPECTING LOCAL CULTURE
Bhutan places great importance on preserving its cultural heritage.
Visitors are encouraged to:
– Dress modestly when visiting monasteries, temples, and dzongs.
– Remove hats before entering religious buildings.
– Ask permission before photographing monks or religious ceremonies.
– Respect local customs and traditions.
– Help keep Bhutan clean by disposing of waste responsibly.
